Geekiness Extraordinaire
Monday, August 1, 2005 @ 9:41 am by -DS-I was going to write something, but then I went to my boyfriend’s blog and he had already written most of the things I was going to say.
So, what else can I say?, well, I am going to attack this game with my previous experience with Ultima Online.
Guild Wars is an uber entertaining game that TRIES to be an MMORPG, but its not, why? MMORPG’s tend to have several levels of “deepness”, they have a somewhat steady virtual economy that, believe or not, make the game enjoyable. Why an economy is that important? Because it is based on supply and demand AND to supply the demand of some items on the game you need different professions, and that need for professions is what makes the game really enjoyable and fun to play. In traditional MMORPG’s you can be many things, a blacksmith, a sailor, a miner, a cooker (¿?), a tailor, a craftsman, a mage, a warrior, you name it. But in Guild Wars you don’t have any of those things making it REALLY weak, but at the same time it eliminates some level of complexity because it is easier to play. From the moment you enter the game you can go and start making guests while in traditional MMORPG’s you have to spend days, or even weeks making your character stronger by killing bunnies or dogs…, how funny huh?, but at the same time that time you invest in your characters (more than one because you need several characters making money so you can financially support your “main” character) making it stronger attach you more and more to the game to the point that your social life sits on the second spot.
Another thing that made my long stay in Ultima Online (two years) enjoyable were Player Killers, or how we know it in Geeky argot, PK’s. The sensation that you could be attacked at any moment by anyone around was exciting, that sensation alone made it very fun and risky to go out of towns alone by yourself, and because of that you had to work harder to make your character even stronger to “get even” or to eventually become a PK yourself, which I did. Guild Wars don’t have that, it has an PvP mode, but is not the same thing because you already know that someone is going to attack you and is more like a competition mode, still, I have yet to explore that more to its fullest extent so it might be a little funnier in time.
Taking aside my previous experience with an MMORPG I can say that GW is great, it has GREAT graphics, you have to actually sit back and enjoy the scenery because they are awesome. The game play is fast and furious, the first missions were crappy and slow, but that is to be expected, but now I am just at level 8 and things are really ugly, the world is HUGE and the enemies attack you by the dozen…, I cant imagine what it will be like when I am at level 20…

GW has a very light version of a trade market, where traders sell their shit based on supply & demand. It’s not the intricate ecomonic empite of UO, but at least it’s light and quick. Just like I like it. You know I have the attention span of an epileptic mosquito, that’s why GW’s swift gameplay fits me perfectly.

The only difference in that in GW you sell what you find, in UO you sell what you make, and if you are REALLY good at your profession your items could be better than the “special” items some monster give making you a real important person in the game.

Well I won’t argue with that. But still, the game’s damn good. It’s an MMORPG crafted for people who can’t dedicate a lot of time and money to these things.
