MediaPortal
Monday, December 5, 2005 @ 10:11 pm by -DS-Do you remember some posts ago when I said that I wanted to build a PVR using Linux? Well I scrapped that Idea, maybe not forever but for some time. Why? Well, the other day I was hanging around COMPUSA and I saw what could be the PERFECT gift for Christmas *HINT* *HINT*, not that I am expecting for anyone to give me something like that, no, but it would be nice to have. *Grin*. What? But why leave the all mighty Linux? Well, I also did a search around the net and found THIS, a Media center for XP. What is so great about it? For start its for Windows, now I don’t have to worry about compatibility or drivers, second, its OPEN SOURCE, and third, its made in C#, C-fucking-#, so that means that if the little proggie doesn’t have something that I like I can program it into it with no problem, and that excites me!, not to the point that I have to masturbate over it, but yes, it is exciting.
Speaking of gifts, I still don’t know what the fuck give my boyfriend for Christmas. He already told me that he wants some DVD from Margaret HO but I don’t know, he will be expecting that and I always like to surprise him with my gifts, give him something that he don’t expect, but I don’t know what the fuck to give him!!!, ack!!! this is so frustrating!!!…, Bleh, Ill just wrap myself into some gift paper and give myself to him…, hmmm, that doesn’t sound so bad.
The luck of the draw.
This month I will be an uncle for the second time and tough I am really happy for that it angers me. Why? Because my other nephew was also born on this month so that means that from now on, on every Christmas I will be flat broke!!! And worst of all, by the look of things my new nephew MIGHT be born on the same day as my other nephew, can you believe that? My sister in law is already a week late to give birth but since this is her first baby that is understandable, I am begging her to wait at least until the 25 but she always gives me weird looks when I say that, I don’t know its like she wants to drop it right away, pffftt, It has been there nine months bitch, surely you can hold it a little longer!!!, come on, please!!!!

For a minute there (before clicking on the “PERFECT” and “THIS” links), I thought you were talking about Microsoft’s media center (which still hasn’t come out yet, I think, but I’m not sure)… and I wanted to strangle you.
Now I don’t want to strangle you, but I still encourage you to go with Linux. No matter how open source this Media Portal may be, it’ll still be running on Windows, which isn’t the most stable operating system, to say the least, especially when it comes to playing videos and audio, multimedia in general. Actually, this Media Portal uses Windows Media Player (it’s one of the requirements to run the software, must mean it doesn’t use its own player), which is by far one of the worst, choppiest, most unpredictable pieces of multimedia-playing software ever written.
If I was gonna set up a box from scrartch, I’d want to use a stable operating system. And that would be Linux or OS X, in my book. (I’d use something like Kubuntu Linux, if I were you.) Also, I’d want my media-center-type-app to use a good, stable media player to play back my video and audio files, and “good” and “stable” are something WMP is not.

I know, but it being open source and programmed in C# helps a lot because I can change that WMP requirement and put something I like, like VLC or even Winamp
And Windows being unstable depends solely on the hardware it runs on, and mine is pretty stable, I have never seen a BSOD…, except for last Sunday that my CDRW blew off

Sweet Lord Jesus! This is what I’ve been looking for too. I’ve been tinkering with the idea of building me a MythTV box but did not want the hassle or possible conflicts with video capture devices in Linux. I will give this a try. Thanks for the find.

While I concur in that Windows’ stability depends a lot on the hardware (like any other OS), I must insist in the fact that its stability also depends greatly in Microsoft’s updates, patches, etc. And those have a nasty habit of fucking things up every once in a while.
On the other hand, since you speak the language, I agree that having the program completely written in C# will help you fine-tune it into the perfect application for your needs. Good luck with this project. (Good to know your priorities are in order… get WMP out of the equation.)

There's always Tivo, too. We've had ours for about 5 years, and it was one of the best investments I ever made.
