Windows Media Center
Thursday, December 29, 2005 @ 11:35 am by DarK SouLOk, I give up. I spent several days trying to configure my remote control to work with Windows XP Pro but to no avail, it wouldn’t work no matter what I tried, so I threw myself in the hands of Satan himself. I formatted my PC and installed Windows Media Center. And you know what? It was so shiny and pretty that it got my attention!, but then it surprised me even more when it asked me to configure the remote control. The wizard told me to take the remote of my satellite receiver and to point it to the IR Transceiver installed on the PC and after following some instructions in less than 2 minutes my PC was controlling my Satellite Box, something that I couldn’t do with XP Pro because it didn’t wanted to recognize the IR Transceiver.
That was the good thing, now the bad. When I went to watch TV I couldn’t because the computer was lacking a video codec. I said, perfect, let me go to Torrent Spy and download one, ermm, *cough* I didn’t said that. So I went to Torrent Spy but then realized that I couldn’t download anything because Azureus was not installed either. Anyway, to make the long story short I ended installing WinDVD which have the codec that Media center wanted, BUT it was an older version than the one supported by Media Center, soooooo, when I went back to My TV to watch TV again the computer threw me a nice little and not-so-shiny BSOD. My guess is that the error was because of the codec, but it could be some other thing. Anyway, since it was late I decided to leave that today after I get off from work. At least I am a little closer to have my super duper PVR!

MCE 2005 is VERY nice. I just migrated to it from BeyondTV (http://www.snapstream.com/) and Meedio (http://www.meedio.com/) and so far I’m very pleased.
One of the best codecs for Media Center is the Nvidia Purevideo decoder (formerly nvDvd), which works well even if you don’t have an nvidia video card (but better still if you do). I’m sure you can also get it via *cough* bittorrent *cough*.

I was using GB-PVR Which is really good but I wanted some more Power that MCE gives. I will download the Codec tonight and see what happens.
