Wednesday, February 15, 2006 @ 1:26 pm by -DS-A few months ago I ran into a problem with spam on my comments and I solved that with Spam Karma, no big deal as it was a breeze to install. But as of lately the fucking spammers found a way to filter into my referrers list, is not much of a problem because they can’t comment, BUT, they inflate my stats plus steal some bandwidth (well, since my provider upgraded my account to a Tetra byte bandwidth per month that is not much of a problem) , so that is a little nuisance but it bothers me because I don’t want to be looking at spam URL’s every time I look at my stats.
The solution: Referrer Karma
Is not so easy to install as Spam Karma because you have to edit some code manually, and for non-programmers that can be a little difficult, but it gets the job done. It is suppose to work with Spam Karma but I tried to get it working only to find out that is not compatible with Spam Karma 2 (The one I have installed). Anyway, It has only been running for a few hours on my blog and it works great, sooo, since it is so hard to install for non-programmer (almost 90% of the people that use Wordpress) I Will re-write the code and make a workable plugin. I don’t know how much it will take me to do that, maybe a month or so (because I don’t know shit about making plugins for Wordpress, but I am eager to learn!!!), but I will do it.
Why this solution is good and why I am so in love with it? Because it just doesn’t stop the fucking spammers from flooding your referrers list, it also stop them from stealing your precious bandwidth by blocking their access to the site.
Aaaaaaanyway, since I am pretty much done with my current project at the office I will start working on this right away, see ya!

Curioso que escribas de esto hoy porque pensaba escribirte un email para preguntarte sobre Spam Karma. Estoy usando WordPress con mi propio dominio hace como tres días. Y para alguien que sabe tres cominos de programación, estoy sobreviviendo. Todavía estoy en el proceso de aprender, buscar plugins y adaptarme. Estaré esperando tu plug in para probarlo!

Erm…, AAAANYWAY……
Spam Karma rulea bien cabrón para parar el spam en los comentarios, a veces bloquea uno que otro comentario legitimo pero pasa en pocas ocaciones. Lo mejor del plugin es que no necesita que el lector entre el codigo ese que tiene las letras distorcionadas y eso para mi es un BIG plus. Odio esas mierdas.
Los plugins que tengo son:
Get Recent Comments y se utiliza para hacer un listado de los ultimos X cantidad de comentarios, tu le dices cual es la X.
StatTraq para ver los stats sin tener que estar editando el cdigo y poniendo counters de mierda.
Editor WYSIWYG de texto para los posts La nueva version de WP trae un editor de texto que es como el de blogger, mas o menos, pero este me gusta más.

WPG2. Para unir la instalacion de Wordpress con la de Gallery2, Gallery 2 es el album de fotos que tengo.

I got rid of the problem of referrer spam by editing my .htaccess files to deny access from certain sites. Once I started doing that, it dropped off a lot. I’ll check out referrer karma too, though.

I tried that at first but is too tiresome since you have to update the file manually, plus, it slows down the web server a little bit because it has to look at the list before loading the page.
